Business Ethics

Almost all the organizations develop policies, rules, and regulations that they think would lead to effective, moral, and ethical practice of the business activities. Nevertheless, the proper implementation of such policies is neglected by the companies due to many factors that might include cultural and social factors. Therefore, the organizations result in having certain issues and dilemmas that are not inline with the ethical standards for that particular act or relationship. Similarly, one major ethical issue in the employment relationships within the organizations is of Compensation and advancement policies. The paper would discuss this issue in detail and would conclude whether the unethical acts in compensation and advancement are fair or not.

The prejudice and biases are usually present in almost every part of the world, where certain types of people are discriminated due to their gender, race, background, and orientation. Likewise, the organizations also face certain issues where the managers discriminate against women, blacks, and those who have different sexual orientation when considering the compensation and promotional policies for them. Sometimes, the managers set low salaries, ignore bonuses, and do not increase the salaries or bonuses even when the performance is being improved by the employee.

Moreover, there is another phenomenon that describes best the resistance or hurdle in the way of promotion of an employees job status, and that phenomenon is called Glass Ceiling. Glass ceiling basically means that the managers create a barrier or a glass for the employees for their promotion in other words, the employees get stuck or are forced to stick to their current job status and are not promoted to the upper level.

The issues in compensating and promoting have become a very common and vital challenging aspect for the organizations in their human relations management. This could really suffer and damage an organizations reputation in the society, its performance its abiding by the moral and ethical conduct, and could result in the imposition of certain sanctions and regulations by the government or other organizations. The organization must develop strict and fair rules, regulations, and policies regarding the compensation and promotion. For instance, any male manager should be preventing himself from rewarding higher and promoting an attractive woman earlier than others, even if the performance or quality of work of that particular woman is not worth for promotion. The compensation, bonuses, or promotion of a certain employee should be based on his or her performance (Patterson, 2004).

Compensation programs are not so trivial in their significance in fact, they play a vital social role in the organizations and affect a number of decisive results of the company such as the nature of work-relationships among the employees and managers, the commitment of the employees, and their performance as well (Bloom, 2004). Of course, those who are biased and tend to discriminate others would think that there isnt any wrong in altering the compensation or promotional activities for different employees in an unethical way. But, on the other hand, if we evaluate our virtues, moral, and ethical values, then we would come to find that discriminating based on the gender, race, sexual orientation, or background of an employee is no fair. They have the right to live and achieve whatever they want by working hard or in a legal manner, and hence they must be rewarded for that.
