X PERSONAL REFLECTIONS ON MANAGING FOR ORGANIZATIONAL INTEGRITY

Ethics seeks to address questions about morality that is, about concepts such as good and bad, the noble and the ignoble, right and wrong, justice, and virtue. At the core of any company is a set of well-defined values and beliefs that guide the definition of the behaviours, systems, and practices required to achieve the business goals.  A strong corporate culture assists in attracting and retaining talented people.  It also creates an environment that enables those talented people to realize their full potential.
Every organization is different thus the importance of maintaining organizational integrity (Shealon, tools for business success).

Ethics is important in every organization, thus the management should set a system governing the organization. I also support for the fact that an awareness campaign to all members of the organization should regularly be carried out and ensure that there is compliance. Managers play a big role in shaping organizations ethics and have the opportunity to create an environment for compliance. Personally I think if managers are right and honesty, the same behavior will be reflected among its employees. Executives who ignore ethics are at the risk of personal and corporate liability in todays changing environment. They deprive their organization of the benefits available under the new federal guidelines for sentencing organization convicted of wrongdoing.

It is important for an organization to enforce ethics in all its operations otherwise it will run the risk of illegal practices such as loss of reputations, profits high turnover of employees, poor quality products, loss of customers and eventually be faced out of the market. I agree with the writers thought that Integrity strategies vary in design and scope but they all strive to define the companies guiding values, aspirations and patterns of thought and conduct when integrated in to day to day operations of an organization, such help to prevent damaging ethical lapses while tapping into powerful human impulses for moral thought and action.

When every one in an organization is aware of the ethical values, then it becomes easier for a company to operate and take into consideration the different workforce diversity. Hence efficiency and effectiveness in management promoting growth and development of the company in line with its vision, mission, goals and objectives. Every member of the organization will be willing to comply to the set guidelines and hence no pressure at all.
The once familiar picture of ethics as individualistic, unchanging and impervious to the organization influences has not stood up to scrutiny in recent years(managing for integrity, Lynn Sharp). This is very true because different organizations have different ethical values hence no set standardization measure.

Ethics work hand in hand with management. Unethical business practices involve the tacit, if not explit, cooperation of others and reflects the values, attitudes, beliefs, languages and behavioral patterns that define an organization operating culture. There is therefore a need for managers to provide proper leadership and implement appropriate systems that conduct share responsibility with those who conceive, execute and knowingly benefit from corporate misdeeds.

It is well clear that managing organizational integrity is equally important in any organization. This is important for the purposes of quality control system thus avoiding costs involved such as fines, legal expenses and lost sales. The consequences of ethical lapse can be serious and far reaching. Organization can quickly become entangled in an all consuming web of legal proceeding. The risk of litigation and liability has increased in the past decade. Managers should be equally alert on the importance of organization ethics. They should establish compliance standards and procedures and designate high level personally to oversee compliance, avoid delegating authority to those that are likely to act unlawfully, effectively communicate the companies standards and procedures through trainings, publications and take reasonable steps to achieve compliance through audits, monitoring processes and a system for employees to report criminal misconduct without fear of retribution, consistently enforce standards through appropriate diplomacy procedures and response to offenses and finally take steps to prevent the occurrence of similar offenses in future.

A compliance approach to ethics should be in place to channel behavior in lawful directions. People normally have a strong obligation to obey the law. Education about the legal standards and supportive environment maybe all thats required to ensure compliance .Discipline is also important part of an ethical system. Every one should be self disciplined. The law is important in enforcing legal governance since it acts like a standard for personnel.

Ethic management gives life to an organization guiding values and instills a sense of shared accountability among employees. Ethical values shape the search opportunities, the design of organization system and decision making process used by an organization. This is important because they help in unifying force across different functions, lines of business and employee groups, thus it serves as a guideline to the companys set achievements.

I strongly agree with the write on the hallmarks of an effective integrity strategy which can be influences by personality, companys history, and culture, line of business and industry regulations. It is appropriate for a company to set guiding values and commitments, leaders should be personally commited, credible and willing to take action on values they espouse, the espoused values are integrated in to the normal channels of management decision making and are reflected in the organization critical activities, the companies systems and structures and reinforce companies values. Managers should have the decision making skills and knowledge and competencies needed to take ethically sound decisions on a day to day basis.

I would like to conclude by saying that managing organizational integrity is important in every organization and thus managers should seek to implement such systems which will lead to efficiency and effectiveness.
